Week 6- Community Engagement & Your PLN

How does social media engage/ challenge communications?

Overtime social media has changed how we communicate with one another. It has given people a platform to interact and engage with one another in real time, expanding the visibility and reach of information, enabling two-way communication, fostering connections, and fostering social change.

Social media helps people communicate by removing barriers posed by more conventional means of doing so. People can connect with others from all over the world, create new networks and establishing new partnerships. People can express their thoughts, exchange ideas, and discuss current events on social media in ways that weren’t before conceivable. As a result, there is now a more welcoming and open communication environment.

Social media has also altered how we get our news and information. these platforms have displaced traditional news sources and become the main source of news and information. As a result, there is a 24-hour news cycle that continuously inundates users with information. Nevertheless, this has also made it more difficult to check information and filter it, which has contributed to the proliferation of false information

Social media has also challenged traditional modes of communication. The need for concise and attention-grabbing content has resulted in oversimplification and loss of nuance. This has created a new set of challenges for communicators, who must adapt to this new style of communication while still maintaining the integrity and accuracy of their message.

However, social media also poses a number of communication issues. The frequency of trolling, cyberbullying, and harassment is one of the biggest problems. Social media’s anonymity has made it simpler for people to act in this way, which can have a detrimental effect on relationships and communication.

Another challenge is the potential for social media to reinforce existing biases and echo chambers. Social media algorithms are designed to show users content that aligns with their interests and preferences. This can create a situation where users are only exposed to ideas and opinions that reinforce their existing beliefs, limiting their exposure to diverse perspectives.

Furthermore, social media policies and guidelines can also be challenging to navigate, especially in the context of employment. It’s important to understand the policies of both the employer and the social media platform to ensure that communication remains professional and appropriate.

The policies of employer social media communication expectations?

Employers have specific expectations when it comes to social media communication, and it’s important to understand these policies to avoid potential negative consequences. These policies often outline what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior on social media platforms, as well as guidelines for representing the company online.

Some common policies include not sharing confidential information, avoiding negative or derogatory comments about the company or coworkers, and refraining from engaging in political or controversial discussions. It’s also important to remember that even personal social media accounts can reflect on the employer, so it’s essential to maintain a professional tone and image online.

Failure to adhere to these policies can result in disciplinary action, termination, or damage to one’s professional reputation. Therefore, it’s crucial to review and understand the policies of your employer regarding social media communication and to always act in accordance with them.
